Day 11: Travel by train & bus to Rodi & walk to Faido. Travel by train to Lavorgo & walk to Giornico. Travel by bus & train to Bellinzona (MAPS 3 & 4).
After breakfast they headed to the railway station of Airolo (1141m a.s.l.), which is the highest railway station of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) (BAHNHOF AIROLO). There they boarded the "Treno Gottardo" to Faido. In Faido they changed to a bus and got off at Rodi "Dazio Grande".
The "Dazio Grande" is a building from the middle of the 16th century. It served as customs house for goods, transit traffic, hoarse-changing station, guesthouse, hostel and warehouse until 1803, the year when the Ticino became part of the Swiss Confederation. It remained in operation, until the Gotthard railway line was inaugurated in 1882. Nowadays, it is still open for the public as a museum and provides a rustic restaurant and overnight accommodation (DAZIO GRANDE).
From there they started their hiking, which took them along the "Via Gottardo Süd", passing by the two most impressive gorges ("Piottino" and "Biaschina"), which are shaping the landscape of the upper Ticino, and ending by the village Giornico.

In accordance with the "Giruno" train pictures taken along the "Gotthard" mountain route, I have done a memory game.
My idea was that one does not only play a memory game. At the same time, one gets for each memory pair a different train combination, like in reality. By repeating the game, one can therefore see with which trains one had travelled most. The game consists of 41 train cards and 41 number cards, in pairs from 1-20. There is one single card with the number 21, as the number of "Giruno" trains is odd with 41. That card is serving as a joker and counts double.
How to proceed with the game: (1) Print out the sheets and cut out all train and number squares; (2) Arrange the train squares on the table, but turn them on the back that one does not see the picture; (3) Cover each train with a number square and play the game according to the rules of a memory game, where you must find two number pairs; (4) If you have a memory, e.g. with the card number 1 take the card numbers and train cards and cover up the "Giruno" cards, e.g. you had the trains "Giruno Ceneri" and "Giruno San Gottardo". That memory counts as one point. If you have covered up the joker card number 21, take the card number with the "Giruno" train card. Here you have two points. The winner is the person, who has gained the highest points.
Enjoy the game and have fun!
