After breakfast they headed to the railway station of Airolo (1141m a.s.l.), which is the highest railway station of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) (BAHNHOF AIROLO). There they boarded the "Treno Gottardo" to Faido. In Faido they changed to a bus and got off at Rodi "Dazio Grande".
The "Dazio Grande" is a building from the middle of the 16th century. It served as customs house for goods, transit traffic, hoarse-changing station, guesthouse, hostel and warehouse until 1803, the year when the Ticino became part of the Swiss Confederation. It remained in operation, until the Gotthard railway line was inaugurated in 1882. Nowadays, it is still open for the public as a museum and provides a rustic restaurant and overnight accommodation (DAZIO GRANDE).
From there they started their hiking, which took them along the "Via Gottardo Süd", passing by the two most impressive gorges ("Piottino" and "Biaschina"), which are shaping the landscape of the upper Ticino, and ending by the village Giornico.

Day 6: A trip to the "Reussdelta" nature reserve near Flüelen & relax (Map 2).
Today another interesting day awaited them. After breakfast, they walked to the railway station, then followed the track direction to the nature reserve "Reussdelta" (approx. 2.5km from the railway station).

Figure 27: Nature reserve "Reussdelta"
The area of the "Reussdelta" (Figure 27) has a wealth of habitats and is for several water birds, such as pochard, an important site to overwinter. Moreover it is also an important place for human utilization, where since more than 100 years mining of gravel has strongly influenced the natural dynamics of the river's landscape.
In the year 1985 the "Reussdeltagesetz" was lanced, it is a law issued to various users which aims to respect the protection of the area. The originally canalized "Reuss" river flows in three river branches ending into the "Urnersee" lake and forms a river delta in harmony with nature.
In the estuary the landscape was newly designed to create a small island archipelago "Lorelei-Inseln", by using among others, approximately 3.3mio. t excavated material removed during the construction of the longest train tunnel of the world, NEAT-Gotthard base tunnel. The area is a favored place for leisure and recreation and is an important habitat for a variety of plant and animal species (REUSSDELTA).
Their walking path went along several little streams, over wooden bridges and through a densely vegetated area. Getting closer to the lake, they spotted the white sand of the "Lorelei" islands (Figure 28), which were surrounded by the turquoise blue of the lake.

Everybody was free to explore the area on his own. The water lovers went of course swimming. Others preferred to walk around. The landscape architect Markus, however, was more interested in exploring this newly designed landscape area and swam to one of the nearby islands where he found an original rock from the Gotthard base tunnel (GOTTHARDBASISTUNNEL; REUSSDELTA & Figure 29).

The party got together again at noon time for a pick-nick and after having enjoyed a pleasant relaxing time in the recreation area, they started their walk back to Flüelen in the late afternoon, using the same way back. At the village square they stopped at the café "Hauger", where they had a delicious ice cream. Just opposite the café they saw a small Italian restaurant "Ristorante Pizzeria Grottino da Guiseppe" and decided to have their dinner there.
Back at the hotel they got ready for the evening and headed to the restaurant. Giovanni, the Italian student felt at home in this ambience and exchanged some words in Italian with the waiter, who was very happy and to their surprise even offered them a bottle of house wine free of charge. They enjoyed the meal with a big appetite and so ended their lovely Sunday.
Before going to bed, Daniela arranged with the reception to send their luggage to Göschenen.
